The Ballito Bay Mall has been ordered to close

The Ballito Bay Mall has been ordered to close its doors immediately as it constitutes a danger to the public.

The R350 million mall is still a building site and does not comply with building and fire regulations.

The mall has no electricity connection as the developer was appararently unable to pay the R1.6 million connection fee. Power is supplied by an extension from the nearby defunct Dolphin Coast shopping centre and by generator. It has been mentioned that Ballito Bay Mall has been seen dumping and burying building material, old tyres and other rubble into the large donga that has developed on the land below the mall.

As part of the development’s approval conditions, the municipality requested that Ballito Bay Mall widen Leonora Drive to three lanes between the two circles in Link Road and the Ballito Junction. Link Road/Simbithi Drive across the site frontage needs to be widened to provide right turn lanes as well as increase the capacity of the Leonora Drive/Link Road roundabout.

Public transport laybyes and a speed table must be provided. An additional lane on Link Road from Leonora Road traffic circle to the Ballito Drive traffic circle must be included.
